The defining feature of Akira YAMADA’s work is his vivid yet deeply nuanced red.
His signature SHOJO-HI series is more than an exploration of color. For YAMADA, red is a bold means of expression—one that allows the vessel itself to stand as a complete work of art. Paired with simple, restrained forms, the color gives his pieces a quiet yet powerful presence.
Rather than achieving the color in a single firing, YAMADA builds it through repeated layers and multiple firings. He approaches color not only as color, but also as material, creating surfaces that reveal subtle changes in depth and tone depending on the light and viewing angle.
Behind this contemporary expression lies the long cultural heritage of Kyoto. YAMADA does not see tradition as something fixed. Just as once-radical forms of expression can become tradition over time, he believes that continuing to change is itself an important part of working within tradition.
In recent years, he has also expanded his practice into deep black and silver, while continuing to reconsider and refine the red of SHOJO-HI. At TOHGORO, he is one of the ceramic artists whose continuing evolution we most look forward to seeing.
